Vauxhall VX-R8

I don’t normally have information on non-US cars, but this one caught my eye a little bit.  The Vauxhall VX-R8 has a unique style to it - I wouldn’t exactly say that I love the styling, but it’s unique to be certain.  What really got my attention is the specs.  Our wacky British cousins who live across the pond will get to enjoy this beauty sometime this summer.  Fish and chips, and all that.

Don’t mourn Monaro – here comes the VXR8!

Motoring enthusiasts across Britain mourned the passing of the Monaro. The only Australian-built car to be sold in the UK offered raw and exciting performance thanks to its 6.0-litre V8 and rear-wheel drive set up.

But the thunder from down under hasn’t stopped yet – in fact it’s only going to get louder. Vauxhall has announced the arrival of a new Aussie musclecar – the VXR8 – and it’s more powerful and exciting than even the legendary Monaro.

The dramatic-looking new saloon is powered by the same 6.0-litre V8 as the outgoing Monaro VXR, but revisions to the engine have made it even more efficient. It now develops a massive 420PS and 550Nm of torque, giving it enough grunt to sprint from 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds. No other supercar offers this sort of power for anywhere near the VXR8’s price.

Yet the VXR8, based on Australia’s Holden HSV Clubsport R8, offers more in the way of practicality than the outgoing Monaro, with four doors and space for all the family.

Although practical, with a spacious boot, comfortable, long-legged cruising ability and luxuries such as climate control and leather trim, the VXR8 is certainly no softie. Driver aids such as the stability system and traction control can be turned off at the flick of a switch – perfect for drivers who want to hone their skills on a track day!

And VXR8 goes as well as it stops, too, with powerful 365mm front disc brakes that slow the car down from 60mph to a standstill faster than a Lamborghini Murcielago or BMW M5.

In response to customer demand, the VXR8 will also be the first VXR model to be offered with an automatic gearbox. In order to maintain the control which VXR buyers require, the optional £1,400 self-shifter has a manual override and a sport settings which ensure the performance isn’t blunted – in fact the auto is only half a second slower to 60mph than the manual!

Satellite navigation and 20-inch wheels will be offered as options for those who want to make their VXR8 look more distinctive and help find their way to the best driving roads. Even with all the option boxes ticked however, the VXR8 is still around half the price of other cars with comparable performance. As all fast car fans know, Aussie rules…….

  1. Compare the Vauxhall to the New Pontiac G8 and you’ll see that under the subtle differences in styling they are exactly the same.
  2. You know what, you’re right. I don’t know how that got past me - though I admittedly don’t know a whole lot about non-US cars just yet. I’m still very much in the learning stage when it comes to that area. It’s too bad that Pontiac had to mess up the G8 with that doofy grille. The Vauxhall VX-R8 looks so much nicer.
  3. These cars are just the same because Pontiac, Vauxhall and Holden are all owned by General Motors so the difference is only badges and a bit different on the exterior. Once I get £34,995 i WILL buy one. hahaha
  4. I know - 35 thousand pounds is a lot - that’s like $70,000 in US dollars. Yikes! I can buy a Corvette Z06 for that. I know, I know, apples to oranges and all that, but still.

  6. Ouch - is that extra $20k in taxes or something? That’s ridiculous.
  7. pretty much, I priced a brand new Dodge Viper SRT10 in the UK and in the USA and in the UK it costs the same as $135,155 but in the USA its $86,995 so we get major tax!
  8. Oh my gosh…… I had no idea it was so bad on the other side of the pond. It’s like like I can actually afford a Viper anyway, but the thought of a Viper costing $135k is absurd.

    If it’s like that with every car, then I guess it makes sense that most cars in the UK are tiny - that’s all regular people can afford! The government must be raking in the cash big time.

  9. Yea, that’s too bad about the UK cars costing so freakin much. I’m happy to live here in the USA - no doubt about it!

    Now if they can only bring the vauxhall vx r8 over here, I’d be even happier ;)

  11. Is HSV a whole other brand in Australia, or is it like a division of Holden?
    I’m still trying to wrap my hands around all the non-US brands, and it’s quite a job, let me tell you.
  12. HSV is the sports version the Holden, the full name is the Holden HSV Clubsport R8 just like and Vauxhall decided to put VXR as the whole name so its Vauxhall VX-R8 instead of something like Vauxhall VXR R8
  13. Gotcha Gotcha. So it’s sorta like SVT or SRT here in the states then.
  14. Hi The vauxhall vx r8 Is the same as HSV Clubsport R8 just with a couple of minor tweaks. HSV stands for Holden Special Vehicle and is the Preformace tuners of holden.The Pontiac G8 (Holden Commodore VE SS-V) is totally diffrent to Vauxhall VXR8 (HSV E Series Clubsport R8) the VXR8 (HSV) has bigger brakes , sportier suspension , more extensive engine mods , bigger sportier bodykit/wheels and slightly diffrent head and tail lights and interior and i think that’s about all the differences
