Toyota recalls 3.8 Million vehicles

The reputation of Toyota as the perfect, unfailing automaker has taken some hits over the last few years. This latest recall, however, is massive. 3.8 million vehicles, to be exact. These vehicles are the ones affected:

  • 2007-2010 Camry
  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • 2004-2009 Prius
  • 2005-2010 Tacoma
  • 2007-2010 Tundra
  • 2007-2010 ES 350
  • 2006-2010 IS 250 and IS 350

The problem is, of all things, the floormats. Take a look at the picture to the left, and you can see the problem. The floor mats could cause the gas pedal to stick in the wide open throttle position. When that happens, your car just goes faster and faster, and there’s not a whole lot of much you can do about it. Not exactly reassuring.

So if you’re driving one of those years and models, take out your driver’s side floor mat. Go ahead, do it now – I’ll wait. Now throw it away, burn it, stick it in the garage, whatever. You’re going to have to go floor mat-less for now, until Toyota figures out what they’re going to do. Don’t replace the floor mat for now, unless you like the idea of a stuck gas pedal.
