Honda has officially announced that 2009 will be the last model year for the S2000 Roadster. Introduced in 1999, Honda has found homes for over 65,000 of these four-cylinder powered drop tops. While I’ve never been a fan of high powered 4 cylinder cars, (I can’t stand the sound ), I’ve always respected the S2000 as an engineering marvel. 240 HP from a 2.4 liter naturally aspirated four cylinder engine is nothing short of impressive.
With the low volume, and likely high cost of developing a replacement…. I can see why Honda is pulling the plug. Especially in today’s automotive market, where only the strong will survive. Unfortunately I’d be willing to bet that several more niche vehicles like the S2000 will get the axe in the coming months.
