Honda Accord Hybrid – Game Over
Ever since the rumors of a next generation Accord Diesel started, I knew that the future of the Accord Hybrid was just about over. And today it’s officially official – there will be no next-generation Accord Hybrid, at least not in the near future. Let’s take a moment to remember the Accord Hybrid for what it was, and wasn’t.
Honda Accord Hybrid Specs
- 253 HP 3.0 liter V6 engine
- AT-PZEV emissions rating
- EPA Ratings of 28 mpg city / 35 mpg highway
- Curb weight : 3605 lbs
The Accord Hybrid was never an economy hybrid – it didn’t challenge the Prius or Civic Hybrid in all-out fuel economy. It did, however, combine excellent gas mileage ( better than the 4 cylinder Accord ) with increased performance over the regular V6. So in essence, it was a “muscle hybrid” with no mileage penalty.
What went wrong? Well, a few things. When you drive it like a bat out of hell, the mileage goes out the window. So using all that power does hurt you, and thus many people got far below EPA ratings. Nothing new, and not Honda’s fault, but a fact nonetheless. Also, this car is downright porky, weighing in at over 3605 lbs. Hybrid or not, that’s a lot of weight for a midsize sedan, and surely an improvement could’ve been made there.
Since Honda has managed to move less than 6,000 Accord Hybrids this year, they’ve axed it. What does that mean to you? Well, if you want one ( and it’s a great car, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t want you to expect Prius-like fuel economy numbers ), then you’re in for a treat. Dealers are likely to go to great lengths to give these puppies away. In addition to the cancellation of this model, the brand new 2008 Accord is literally just right around the corner. I can’t imagine that the current Accord Hybrid would do particularly well sitting next to a pile of fresh new 08 Accords. So if you’re in the market, you can pick one up super cheap, if you’re willing to haggle a little. If you want, get a quote here, and save yourself some driving around.
