Fritz OK with losing money on Chevy Volt

x11ch_vt003 It’s never been a secret that the Chevy Volt project would not be profitable, at least in the first generation.  The R&D costs are massive, and the technology is quite expensive for now.  That being said, the assumption was always that the second generation would finally see a profit, due to costs coming down.  GM’s new CEO, Fritz Henderson, is now saying that the second generation will continue to lose money – although less than the first.

In light of this, GM still plans to produce the revolutionary Volt, which is a good thing.  If GM can stay alive long enough, and make the Volt as good as we’re all hoping, they could end up pretty far ahead in this game.  Eventually the Volt will be profitable, and it could be *the* choice for the average customer looking for an electrified car.

GM and I don’t often think alike.  But it’s great to hear that they’re really thinking long-term with the Volt.  It can work if they stick with it, and it sounds like they’re willing.  Good work, Fritz old pal.
