We reported just the other day that the 2008 Dodge Challenger would start at $37,995 ( which we thought was too high ). It turns out we were off by a cool $2100 – exactly the amount of the gas guzzler tax that was missing. Adding this fun little penalty in pushes the Challenger well into base luxury-car territory. Forty grand is a whole lot of money for a Dodge muscle car – no matter how bad-ass it is. I’m going to have to take a pass on this one for sure now. At $38 grand I was really questioning it, at $40 it just doesn’t make sense. There are too many other cars that you can get for that price. Sure, they’ll be a little light in the horsepower department, but I think most people would agree – that’s not a problem.
Correction: Dodge Challenger to start at $40,095
