From a looks standpoint, the Outlander has never been the prettiest SUV around. The EVO grille looks pretty darn nice on it though, and makes it a pretty good looking package. Almost Audi-esque, which is a big step up for Mistubishi.

Specs still aren’t known yet, but the basics are out. The production engine will be the familiar 2.0L turbocharged inline-4, powering all four wheels of course. Horsepower is expected to be just over 300 – nice. Follow the link below to check out the rest of the pics of the bad-ass Mitsubishi EVO X.

Expect to see the Evo X first quarter of 2008, but it will debut as a 2009 model, which is a little goofy in my eyes. I’m not a big fan of next-year models coming out in the first quarter – just doesn’t seem to follow any logic.

Under the hood will be an updated version of the venerable 2.0 liter I4, turbocharged of course, and power will head to all four wheels via Mitsu’s fancy AWD system.

As soon as we hear horsepower and torque numbers, we’ll send them your way.

This time around, it will share the Outlander platform. This is an awfully strange move for Mitsubishi – sharing a platform between a compact ‘sporty’ car and an SUV is an odd fit, for sure. I have a feeling we’ll see a too-heavy Lancer. The new Lancer does have a longer wheelbase than it’s predecessor, though it’s a few inches shorter, and a bit wider. The looks of the car are actually pretty darn nice. It’s hard to make a good looking compact car, but the Lancer delivers in that area.

The biggest obstacle I see for the new Lancer is that it’s a 2008 model. That means it has to adhere to the new EPA gas mileage testings – and that means lower mileage on the sticker. Will it affect sales? Only the coming months will tell.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Specs

152 HP 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine

CVT transmission or 5 speed manual

paddle shifters available on CVT

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Reviews

Topspeed reviews the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer and writes – ‘As with the exterior, the Lancer’s interior is characterized by clean and crisp surfaces, free of gimmicks and using high-quality materials and marked by careful attention to detail. Each trim line is distinguished by its own distinct seating materials and interior trim. The overall instrument panel shape and design contribute to a more spacious interior feeling than seen in some competitors.’

Autobytel reviews the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer and laments the lack of power and refinement – ‘Mitsubishi says the new Lancer puts out 152 ponies (143 in CA), but in reality it feels significantly less. Equaling the lack of power is the lack of refinement in the powertrain and the interior. On our wish list are some better materials and an exhaust note on the DE and ES models that doesn’t make us check the Yellow Pages for the closest Meineke.’

Inside Line reviews the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer and comments on the added heft – ‘While added weight can hurt anyone, it actually gives the new Lancer a substantial, almost Teutonic sense of over-the-road confidence. The steering requires more effort than before, but it’s not heavy and doesn’t make the car feel cumbersome. This weightiness similarly describes the car’s ride quality and chassis reactions, but in a good way. In particular, the Lancer GTS charges through corners with pronounced certainty, even when the pavement is bumpy and broken.’

Cars.com reviews the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer and comments on the gas mileage - ‘Gas mileage is average, rated at 21/29 mpg city/highway with the five-speed manual and 22/29 city/highway for the continuously variable automatic transmission. These are 2008 estimates, which are lower than what we’ve been used to through the 2007 model year, thanks to new EPA testing guidelines. Under the old guidelines, both transmissions would be rated at 25/31 mpg city/highway. Again, those numbers are about average, but significantly less than segment frontrunners like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, and just slightly worse than the Mazda3 S.’

Here’s a snippet – ‘When we let loose this newest Evo IX on the track, its performance was jaw-dropping. Hit the brakes hard and feel the front four-piston Brembo calipers do their work, match the engine revs to bring this clean-shifting six-speed transmission down into 2nd gear, cut the steering wheel toward the corner, and whoa the Evo IX pivots sharply toward the apex.’

I’ve never been a fan of the Evo personally. In fact, I hate the styling of both the Evo and it’s cross town rival, the Subaru WRX STI. They’re just not my cup of tea – they look like boy-racer mobiles, and I’m just not interested. However, 286 HP and 289 lb-ft of torque make me stand up and take notice, no matter how ugly the package.
