Lotus makes some of the most amazing cars on the road. When you think of exotics, Lotus is always one of the first brands to come to mind. While the current lineup of the Elise and Exige is impressive, there was something lacking.

When the Esprit went out of production in 2004, there was no longer any V8 powered Lotus available. Well, Lotus fans, it’s been long enough. When 2013 rolls around, V8 power will return to Lotus, in an extreme way. Take a look:

2013 Lotus Esprit Specs

620 HP Supercharged 5.0 liter V8

205 MPH top speed

0-60 MPH in less than 3.5 seconds

That’s right, the new Esprit will be packing in excess of six hundred ponies. Granted, you’ll pay for the privilege of being carted around by all those ponies – estimated starting price is $175,000. Given Lotus’ reputation for building some of the world’s best sports cars, I have no doubt that the new Esprit won’t disappoint. Check out the gallery after the jump.

How much will it cost you to pick up one of these 276 HP, 2967 lb rocket? $74,675 will get you in the door, including destination. That’s the entry price anyway – options can push you near six figures.

While you may balk at a nearly $75k price tag for a V6 powered sub-300HP car, hang on a sec. We’re talking about a Lotus here, which means wild, exotic styling, featherlight weight, and sublime handling. The V6 in the Evora will provide more than enough thrust, and should get you from 0-60 in under 5 seconds. Top speed is a go-to-jail 162 MPH, and you should get close to 30 MPG on the highway. Not at 162 MPH, of course, but you already knew that.

While that’s a surprising layout ( I can’t think of another car set up that way, actually ), it’s not the most surprising thing about the Evora. That would be the curb weight. Lotus cars are known for being featherweights – that’s how they handle so well, and generally get away with small engines. The Evora weighs in at a meaty 2967 lbs – almost obese for a Lotus. That being said, it’s quite light for a 2+2 sports car, and should stack up well vs it’s competition. Lotus only plans on building 2000 Evoras per year – so if you want one, you’d better get one pre-ordered soon. Oh, and expect to pony up some cash – it won’t come cheap.

Under the hood is the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 from BMW, and it’s expected to be bumped to an even 500 HP for the Esprit. A five hundred horsepower monster engine from BMW combined with Lotus’ expert handling? Can we say Ferrari rival at a fraction of the price? As long as it doesn’t stray too far on design, the new Esprit will find quite a few willing buyers.

The specs aren’t hard yet, but here’s what it looks like. BMW will provide the engine, a 4.8 liter V8 that will make somewhere north of 400 HP. Knowing the history of the Esprit, I would expect twin turbochargers to assist with the power production here. No word on US pricing yet, but in the UK the 2009 Esprit will be about 70,000 pounds sterling – which translates directly to $140,000 or so here. However, cars are more expensive in the UK, so expect a price drastically less than that.

Either way, I can’t wait to see the uncovered Esprit, and I can’t wait till it’s back in the states. Lotus doesn’t have a lot of models, and they always make sure the ones that they do produce are fantastic. I expect no less from the 09 Esprit.
