August Sales Numbers

Down, down down.  That sums up August for nearly every major automaker.  Double digit losses across the board were the norm – though some escaped with “only” single digit drops.  The domestic losses were epic in some cases.  Let’s see the highlights:

The biggest losers

  • Cadillac -21%
  • Chevy -19%
  • Chrysler -44%
  • Dodge -25%
  • Ford -26%
  • Jeep -44%
  • Hummer -62%
  • Mercury -32%
  • Mitsubishi -29%
  • Pontiac -38%
  • Porche -44%
  • Saab -50%
  • Suzuki -32%
  • Volvo -49%

My word.  What an absolute fucking bloodbath.  Hummer down 62%?  Saab down 50%?  Chrysler and Jeep down 44%?  The list goes on and on.  It’s truly painful to look at – I actually feel sorry for the domestics.

The few bright spots

  • Mini +34%
  • Nissan +14%
  • Subaru +14%

That’s it.  Nissan is the only major brand to post an increase, and that was due to massive incentives.  That can’t be profitable, or sustainable.  How will Nissan fare in September with reduced incentive spending?
