65,000 Hyundai Elantras Recalled

2008-hyundai-elantra Attention owners of 2008 Hyundai Elantras equipped with the 2.0 liter “Beta” engine - Hyundai will be mailing you a letter soon.  This recall affects roughly 65,000 Elantras - not a small number given Hyundai’s sales numbers.  What’s the big deal, you wonder?  Nothing horrible, actually.  Ethanol present in gasoline ( such as the E10 sold pretty much everywhere ) can cause a film buildup inside the fuel pump.  Theoretically this could cause hesitation while driving.  No accidents have been reported, and it’s doubtful there would be.  Good job Hyundai, on reporting the problem anyway.

  1. It’s been a recall festival the last few days. Hyundai, Jaguar, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors does over 800K. It’s interesting to congratulate the company on reporting. It’s true, they do a good job to catch these things. But after exhaustive development over a span of 12-24 months or more, in deserts and arctic climes, why are some of these simpler things not caught?
  2. You’re right, it does seem a little strange. And objectively speaking, small matters like the one at hand probably *should* be caught before a vehicle is released to the public.

That being said, there are so many thousands of things that need to happen for an automobile to reach production. Small issues like this one are bound to slip through from time to time. The fact that Hyundai chose not to stuff it under the rug is commendable, I think. Since there were no accidents/ injuries, they probably could’ve gotten away with it. Instead they did the right thing and came forward.
