After leaking a few images, GM decided to just go ahead and release the 2013 Malibu before the Shanghai Motor Show. This is an all-new model, though it’s definitely an evolutionary design rather than a revolutionary one. The front end and side views are very familiar – not that that’s a bad thing. The current Malibu isn’t exactly a hideous beast.
The rear end, however, is where things get interesting. Is that a little Camaro influence I see there? No, it’s a lot of Camaro influence. Those taillights were pulled straight from Chevy’s pony car, and they look great on the new Malibu.
The interior looks great, except for the oddly patterned wood trim. I’m sure that’s optional, as is usually the case.
2013 Chevrolet Malibu Specs
- 190 HP 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine
- 180 lb-ft of torque
- Six speed automatic transmission
The new Malibu is shorter but wider than the current model. Chevy managed to squeeze out a bit *more* legroom for rear seat passengers, along with a bigger trunk.
All in all, I think Chevy has done a great job with this car. It’s instantly recognizable as a Malibu, but has a thoroughly modern (and very muscular) look to it. The interior appears to be top notch, and there’s more than enough power on tap.
