Say goodbye to the Aveo – the latest Chevy subcompact will be known as the Sonic. The 2012 Sonic was officially announced today at the Detroit Auto Show. My first impression is pretty positive – this is a much better *looking* car than the Aveo. Both sedan and hatchback forms look better than the outgoing car.
Inside is perhaps the biggest improvement – the interior appears to be very high quality for this class. Naturally, one can only tell so much from pictures, and the real test will be how it looks and feels in person.
The standard engine is a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder, but the 138 HP turbocharged 1.4 is available as an option. The base transmission is a 5 speed handshaker, with a 6 speed auto available. Finally, a modern transmission as the entry level automatic. (Chevy has a bad habit of mating a 4 speed auto to the base trims in their cars.)
