2010 Mazda 3 Spy Shots

2010-mazda-3 C&D got ahold of some funky spy shots of the 2010 Mazda 3 refresh.  In the shots, the Mazda 3 is wearing some strange striped camo – not the usual look at all.  Click on the thumbnail for the full shots.

So what’s changed?  You won’t have any trouble recognizing the new one as a Mazda 3, which is a good thing.  Out of the current compact cars on the market, the Mazda 3 is one of the better looking / performing choices.  As fro what’s new, expect the new 3 to be larger ( as is the norm these days, regretfully ), new headlights that mimic the new Mazda 6, and probably new taillights.  I say probably, because they are pretty well covered up by the camo.

As for powertrains… well here’s where I lose track.  Rumors say that choices will include a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder, and a 1.6 liter rotary engine.  If the 2.5 liter 4 is the base engine, we have problems.  No way will it be competitive from a gas mileage standpoint.  Throw in the gas-sucking rotary and the problems mount.  Where is the 2.0 liter?  Better yet, a sub 2 liter engine?  I’ve always been impressed with the handling and feel of the Mazda 3…. but they need to get on the ball when it comes to gas mileage.  Hopefully there’s a base engine that’s not yet been announced.
