2009 Toyota RAV4 Revealed

2009 Toyota RAV4 Sport The folks ( geniuses? ) over at Toyota have unveiled the 2009 RAV4, complete with it’s minor changes.  The front end is revised, and comes off looking much more modern.  New wheels of course, across the line.  Contrary to what was previously though, the spare tire does remain on the outside of the vehicle.  The only exception is the Sport Appearance Package that’s available only on the big dog V6 4WD model.  This package includes runflat tires, which eliminates the need for a spare.  It’s a shame that Toyota didn’t incorporate this “naked” rear end across the RAV4 lineup.

2009 Toyota RAV4 Specs

  • 179 HP 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine ( up 13 HP )
  • 269 HP 3.5 liter V6 available ( Unchanged )
  • 4 speed auto with I4, 5 speed auto with V6
  • 22 MPG city / 28 MPG highway ( I4 )
  • 19 MPG city / 27 MPG highway ( V6 )

The base engine is solid, and gets a baby bump in horsepower.  The V6 is unchanged, but really – what was wrong with it?  269 HP in a “compact” CUV is crazy as is.  The EPA ratings are barely lower than the I4, too.  That can be partially attributed to Toyota’s bizarre transmission choices.  The four cylinder RAV4 gets stuck with an ancient 4 speed transmission.  Technically the transmission is new, but archaic in principle.  Four speeds?  This is 2008 for crying out loud.  And this is Toyota, not Chevy.  The V6 RAV4 gets a slightly better 5 speed auto.  I’d really like to see six speeds as standard on the RAV4….

Overall – a little underwhelming.  Poor transmission choices, and the spare tire issue are problems for me.  I shouldn’t have to pony up for the most expensive RAV4 just to get rid of a huge eyesore.
