2009 Nissan Maxima

Years ago, the Nissan Maxima was true to it’s slogan - a Four door sports car. It had a soul in a world of soulless family sedans. It had power and handling that it’s peers could only dream of.

Nowadays, the Altima has really taken over as the sporty sedan in the bunch. The Maxima doesn’t really shine when compared to the Camry or Accord. It isn’t appreciably better, and it doesn’t look particularly sporty.

The folks over at Nissan know that the Maxima has gone off track, and they’re not sitting still about it. For the next generation Maxima, due in 2009, Nissan is going all out. A Nissan insider said the 2009 Maxima will be “unlike anything we’ve ever done”. If I was a guessing man, I’d say we’re going to see some very aggressive styling, as in a four door coupe, ala Mercedes-Benz CLS. The familiar and fantastic 3.5 liter VQ V6 will stay around, and it will still send it’s power to the front wheels. If the Maxima went RWD, it will simply cannibalize sales from the Infiniti G35. Maybe we’ll even see the return of the 6 speed manual ( we better!! )

  1. YES! Nissan has surely done the Maxima a great deal of injustice; I was at the dealer yesterday, Cox Nissan on Boston road, ” Altima & Camry to name a few are all killing the Maxima in styling and performance, this should not be. improvement is welcome, but not the Maxima expense, now I’m leaning towards the Toyota family becauce its time to change my 94 Maxima, a car I love and have taken very good care of, ask my friend Bobby at Cox Nissan, just tell him Lucky told you to ask. Please make me want to buy the new 2009 Maxima. Send me a brochure.
  2. If you’re looking at trading your 94 Maxima, I’d suggest taking a long hard look at the 07 Altima. Having driven it quite a bit, I like it a whole whole lot more than the 07 Max, and more than the Camcord as well. It’s fast, smooth, quiet, and handles fantastically.

Unless, of course, you can stick it out for the 09 Maxima - in which case I say hold on, cuz it’s gonna be impressive.

  3. WOW CAN WAITE PREVIOUS OWNER MYSELF Y HAD 90,97,03 NOW I HAVE AN 06 SE-R ALTIMA WICH I LOVE CANT SAY HOW MUCH BUT WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR CAR IS JUST NOT THE SAME FEALING AS SAYING “MY MAXIMA” GREAT NEWS THANK’S
  4. The last generation Accord and any Camry are not in the same class as the Maxima. That is a sales ploy used by salespeople at those dealerships to have customers look at a Maxima and get sticker shock.

The altima is the closest thing from Nissan to those two cars built by those two manufacturers. The Avalon is the closest in the Toyota line to the maxima. Possibly, the new generation Accord will be able to compete with the Maxima, as it is a larger car with an optional V-6 engine.

  5. After having worked at a Nissan dealership previously, I would have to disagree with you Kevin, at least on the part of the Accord. On paper the Maxima had a bit more horsepower than the V6 Accord, and it was indeed a tad faster. But as far as composure on the road, smoothness, ride quality, etc, they were pretty much on par. And though the Maxima is marketed as “larger than the Altima” it really isn’t - at least not in any appreciable measure. It’s a midsize family sedan, much like the Accord, Altima, and Camry.

I’ll admit to not being intimately familiar with the last gen Camry, so you may be spot on there. The end result, though, is that the current Max is outclassed and overpriced. That’s why there’s a $3,000 rebate being offered right now - yikes.
