2009 Kia Borrego

Kia-Borrego Remember the Kia Mesa spy shots? Kia decided to rename their upcoming body-on-frame midsize SUV, and it’s called the Borrego. It’s set to be released as a 2009 model, with both a V6 and V8 available. Am I the only one who thinks this vehicle is about 8 years too late? Traditional SUV sales have been in the crapper for a long while now, with no signs of ever returning to their glory days. And with gas prices on the rise yet again, things aren’t looking good.

Perhaps Kia’s thinking is that they’ll undercut the domestics on price, and steal what sales they have left in this area. I still think their R&D money would have been better spent elsewhere.

  1. Kia is clearly an intelligent automaker; growing ridiculously fast and making money. But this Borrego - boring styling on a quickly-growing-outdated type of chassis - isn’t an example of this intelligence. So to answer your question, no. You’re not the only one who thinks the Borrego is 8 years too late. Kia’s USA sales managed to climb 20% in October, however.
  2. Good to see that I’m not alone in thinking the Borrego is a foolish product to build and release at this point.

For the life of me I can’t understand why anyone buys Kia, so the 20% jump is baffling to me. Who wants to tell their friends / family that they just bought a Kia?
