2009 Ford Flex Pricing Announced

2009 Ford FlexYou can mark down today, February 27, 2008 as the date the Flex failed in the US marketplace.  What’s that, you say?  The Flex isn’t even going to be on dealer’s lots until the summer?  That’s right, and I’m already calling it dead in the water. Why the sudden pessimism?  Ford announced pricing on the 09 Flex, and it isn’t pretty.  Base pricing for a Flex SE FWD is a cool $28,995.  That’s the base price.  If you opt for the decked out Limited AWD version, you’ll be staring at a $37,255 sticker.

If you were hoping that Ford decided to stuff the EcoBoost engine in their as a surprise, you would be wrong.  The Flex will do without the EcoBoost for now, and continue with the 3.5 liter Duratec V6 as planned.

I don’t see any compelling reason to spend nearly $30,000 on a base Flex.  The styling is a bit different than other SUV’s, but not remarkably so.  The powertrain isn’t exceptional, nor is the quality, equipment, or fuel economy.  With such a high sticker, Ford will already be forced to offer huge incentives just to move the Flex off their lot.  It’s a strategy that has worked out poorly for them all these years, and there’s no sign that will change.
