2009 Camaro too little too late
Reportedly, the production dates for the new Camaro are as follows - February 2009 for the coupe, and December 2009 for the convertible. That’s simply far, far too long, and it spells failure for the Camaro, long before it’s release.
Why do I think the Camaro will fail? Think about it. The “new” retro Mustang has been on the market since the 2005 model year. The Challenger will be out early next year, albeit only the SRT-8 model. Most people in the pony car market will already have one or the other by the time Chevy gets around to putting Camaro’s on dealers lots. This car was hot long ago, and it’s desirability will continue to drop. Gas prices are on the rise, and new CAFE regulations are going to put the squeeze on high powered, low mileage vehicles like the Camaro.
If Chevy had managed to get the Camaro to market, say, around right now, it might have a chance. But if we’re looking at early-mid 2009 for starters, I’d say we’re looking at a flop of epic proportions. C’mon GM, don’t ruin a good idea with poor implementation, again.
