2008 Pontiac G8

2008 Pontiac G8It’s now official, the Holden Commodore SS from Australia will debut as the Pontiac G8 this summer, probably in August of 2007.  Naturally, the good folks over at Pontiac had to replace the unoffending Holden grille with the embarrassingly ugly Pontiac family grill.  But we couldn’t expect anything less from our GM buddies, now could we?

The big news for the G8 is under the hood – the base engine is solid, but not spectacular.  When you step up to the GT trim, you get the big daddy engine – the 6.0 liter V8 of Corvette fame, set up for a solid 362 HP this time around.  Torque is even more impressive, at 391 lb-ft.  The only problem I see is the prodigious weight – the G8 GT will weigh in at 3995 lbs – that’s pretty serious.  With a driver, you’re looking at over 4,000 lbs.  Even motivated by that beast of an engine, this car won’t be as quick as it should.  Granted, it’s a large car, but still.

I’m not sure how to take the G8 yet.  The exterior is OK if unexciting, grille notwithstanding.  The interior is a different story, and pretty darn nice, as is Holden custom.  The color scheme in this shot isn’t my favorite, but the interior does look very high quality and stylish.  Pricing isn’t out yet, so no comment there for now.
