2008 Jeep Liberty

2008 Jeep Liberty I’m not exactly sure where the Liberty fits into Jeep’s new lineup. After all, there isn’t really much space between the Compass and Patriot, is there? There’s also the Dodge Nitro in the same family, which shares a platform with the new Liberty.

For some reason, Jeep is convinced that there is room, and that the three units won’t merely cannibalize sales from each other. I think differently, but the folks at DCX didn’t consult me this time. In fact, I can’t recall the last time they called me at all. Maybe that’s why they are going bankrupt.

Anyway, back to the Liberty. The “cute” look is mostly gone, replaced by a mini-Commander look. And considering how well the Commander sold, that makes perfect sense, right?

Jeep decided to keep the same tired, underpowered, inefficient 3.7 liter V6 under the hood, instead of using the slightly better 4.0 V6 from the Nitro. And, in typical Chrysler fashion, the sad engine is hooked up to an archaic 4 speed automatic. Why in the world would anyone buy this vehicle?

2008 Jeep Liberty Specs

  • 210 HP 3.7 liter V6
  • 6 speed manual, with available 4 speed auto
  • Available 4WD ( duh )
  • Standard side curtain airbags
  • EPA Says : 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway

2008 Jeep Liberty Reviews

Autobytel previews the 2008 Jeep Liberty and writes – ‘Think Nitro meets Commander, and you’ve got a good idea of what the 2008 Jeep Liberty looks like. Or, you could look at the photo on the right. Jeep swaps the Nitro’s gaudy Range Rover side vent for a more subdued Suzuki-style outlet, and the Liberty has the trademark Jeep face with round lighting elements and a seven-slot grille, but otherwise the two SUVs are virtually identical. Liberty Sport gets standard 16-inch wheels for that cheap rental car look, while upscale Limited versions have standard 17-inch rims. Chrome 18s are optional.’
