2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Review – Autobytel

2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Autobytel has their Driving Impressions of the new 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, and they express their concerns about fuel economy – ‘This engine is sluggish until revs build, and then the engine displays some verve. But it sure drinks fuel like it’s got all those ponies under the hood, despite Ford’s claim that its class-exclusive six-speed automatic conserves fuel. We eked out just 13.4 mpg during a week of driving. Improved fuel economy might be wishful thinking, but the transmission does shift smoothly at all times; even when kicking down for extra power.’

With a V8 under the hood, I don’t think anyone expected the new Sport Trac to get 25 MPG – it’s just not going to happen. Unless of course you’re talking about the Corvette, which seems to break all the laws of physics. But back to the Sport Trac – even with the 4.6 liter V8 under the hood, I think the 13.4 mpg that Autobytel achieved is absolutely dismal. I drive a 2005 Navigator on a daily basis, with Ford’s 5.4 liter V8, and get slightly better than that mileage. That’s also considering that the Navigator is significantly heavier than the Sport Trac, has a much larger engine, produces more horsepower, and is less aerodynamic due to the larger body. What’s going on Ford – what’s up with the gas mileage?
